J. Leavitt Designs
Bringing Characters to Life Through Custom Costume Design
About J. Leavitt Designs
J. Leavitt is theatrical costume designer with decades of experience in professional and academic theatre. Thinking she was going to review theatre productions for a living, J. earned a BA in English Literature and Theatre, but quickly realized she’d rather make art than write about it. She now holds an MFA in Costume Design and teaches at a university theatre program. Beyond stage costumes, J. has designed one-of-a-kind outfits for cosplayers, drag queens, historical reenactors, and a few brides as well. Each project is an opportunity to explore new corners of research and creativity, blending timeless techniques and textiles with new technology.
Costume design requires skills in research, analysis, garment construction, fabric modification, patterning, multiple crafts, as well as a broad understanding of fashion history, literary analysis, popular culture, and the human psyche. At the center of each outfit is a character. J. Leavitt collaborates with performers of all kinds to create the perfect costume for each unique persona.

Epoch Ensembles & FAN-Tastic Fits
To step back in time and experience how we used to wear is a thrilling adventure, with authentically constructed, impeccably researched garments. A historically accurate silhouette, starting with period-correct foundations, makes the costume a work of art, and the wear a time-traveler. Cosplay and theatrical costuming inspire each other with new materials and techniques to make the fantastic possible. A designer makes sure the silhouette is on point and the fit is accurate. Pay homage to your favorite elf, fairy, space traveler, super hero, Manga character, literary figure, and more! Or collaborate on an outfit inspired by these realms, but original to you.
